Kolache Time

The 16 chicks are doing fine.  I checked on them before going to church and then fed and watered them when I returned home.  I can tell dad has been out looking at them because of the empty Mt. Dew cans (up to 3 so far) sitting on the chair.  Grandma decided that the man who told her to keep the temperature at 90 degrees was "nuts", so the new temperature is between 70 and 80 degrees.  The above photos are of chicks enjoying a few winks of sleep.

Yesterday, I went to go make kolaches in Tabor with Brenda, Anne, and Beatrice.  Beatrice and I used duck feathers to rub the margarine on the edges of the kolaches as they come out of the oven.  We made apricot, lemon, cream cheese, cherry, and a special tropical flavor.  My favorite is the cream cheese.  Brenda gave us 12 to take home to eat and to share with my grandparents and uncles.  Czech Days in Tabor, SD is June 21st and 22nd.

"Hot Chicks"

Today was the arrival of 16 Rhode Island Red chicks to my new chicken coop.  They are so calm compared to my previous Leghorn chicks a year ago.  They don't go spastic or pile up on each other in the corner.  My grandma brought them over after lunch.  They do what normal chicks do...poop (even on me), eat, and sleep.  My grandma said I must keep the temperature in the coop at a steady 90 degrees, but I've only been able to keep it at 80 degrees.  It is really hot in there!  My sister says my grandma wants them to be "HOT CHICKS".  I had to put 1/2 teaspoon of sugar in their water when they first arrived and placed feed in their pan.  Their home came together at the last minute...actually when they arrived!  The heat lamp was on the floor and was put up with a wire by my dad.  The cardboard was on the floor as well and needed to be set up.  Grandma dumped the pine shavings with a WOOSH and my sister had to untangle the electrical cord.  Until tomorrow...
